- What is Tarot?
Tarot is a set of seventy-eight cards, with different symbolic pictures (Archetypes). A standard Tarot deck is made up of 22 cards called the major arcana or trumps, and four suits of 14 cards - similar to playing cards - called the minor arcana or pip cards.
- What benefits will I receive by consulting the Tarot?
When we're upset, confused or unsure of what decisions or choices we should make, consulting the Tarot can help us receive the guidance we need by offering a reflection of the past, present and possible future and showing a fresh perspective on our life. The best guide when it comes to making difficult choices is our intuition.
The cards of the Tarot allow us to tap into a dimension of the universe that may otherwise be inaccessible. They are not necessarily predicative but often turn out to be. They always offer an alternative view and a new perspective on our lives.
- What kinds of questions are good to ask?
Tarot is designed for certain kinds of questions. It works best when you are looking for greater insight, wise advice or an idea of which way a situation is going (what is the best approach to take, what is best way to relate to.)
It is NOT designed to answer questions asking for specifics, yes/no questions or to give exact predictions about the future. (i.e., is John the one for me? Where should I go on vacation?) Consult the Tarot as if you were asking the advice of a wise friend or teacher.
- What are Archetypes?
Archetypes are behaviours and thoughts imbedded in our subconscious mind by society (i.e, Religion, Parents, Environment, etc.) Carl Jung calls it "Collective Unconscious"
- Where did Tarot originate?
It is a mystery where Tarot originated and there are many theories on it's origin - Ancient Egyptians, gypsies, Atlantis - but historical evidence points to a beginning in the courts of Northern Italy, in the mid fifteenth century
- Do I have to be given a Tarot deck for it to work?
No. The power of Tarot lies in the fact that the symbols contained in the deck stimulate your intuition. They are symbols residing in the "collective unconscious." Anyone can tap into these symbols merely by quieting the mind and using the cards in a relaxed state of awareness during which the mind is more receptive to information. Tarot does not receive its wisdom from superstition but from the universe.
- Are Tarot Cards Evil?
No, Tarot works because it contains universal symbols that access the part of the brain that allows us to be psychic. The process is scientific, psychological, and transformative. The "power" in Tarot comes from its interaction with the psychic mind of the reader and not from any outside entity, evil or otherwise.
- Does Tarot predict the future?
The future is not written in stone. Certain things will likely happen because their energies are running in a particular direction. But as human beings we have free will and can change those energies. There are also unforeseen things that can interfere. Therefore what we call the future is what most likely will happen given the present set of circumstances, but we need to keep in mind that anything can change this view of the future. Tarot cards allow us to clarify situations. We all have the answers within us, but not always conscious. Tarot cards, like any other means of divination, can be used to tap into the unconscious, where all the answers lie, and bring it out into the conscious. Then you can make decisions on your own what to do next.
